Heed lessons of the Holocaust - Cape Argus | IOL.co.za
Last week, the world remembered the Holocaust, the seminal historical period of human depravity. The horrific events that unfolded throughout Europe between the years 1933 and 1945 were the culmination of 2 000 years of hatred and discrimination against the Jewish people, their languages and their religion. Eventually, Jews realised, with a majority of states in the UN, that only in a Jewish state would Jews be afforded the protection and rights the world denied them. In 1948 that Jewish state came into being and in its Declaration of Independence, it not only recognised the rights of all its citizens, irrespective of gender or religion, but also their rights to legal protection through the courts, when and if these rights were violated.
